Book Quotes

The primary duty of literature is to tell us the truth about ourselves by telling us lies about people who never existed
— Stephen King

The novel is an event in consciousness. Our aim isn’t to copy actuality, but to modify and recreate our sense of it. The novelist is inviting the reader to watch a performance in his own brain.
— George Buchanan

Even today I hunt for the fabulous books that will change me utterly. I find myself happiest in the middle of a book in which I forget that I am reading, but am instead immersed in a made-up life lived at the highest pitch. Reading is the most rewarding form of exile and the necessary discipline for a novelist who burns with ambition to get better.
— Pat Conroy, My Reading Life
For some of us, books are as important as almost anything else on Earth. What a miracle it is that out of these small, flat, rigid squares of paper unfold world after world after world, worlds that sing to you, comfort and quiet or excite you. Books help us understand who we are and how we are to behave. They show us what community and friendship mean; they show us how to live and how to die. They are full of all the things you don’t get in real life… and quality of attention: we may notice amazing details during the course of the day but we rarely let ourselves stop and pay attention. An author makes you notice, makes you pay attention, and this is a great gift. My gratitude for good writing is unbounded.
— Anne Lamotte in Bird by Bird

All the books we own, both read and unread, are the fullest expression of self we have at our disposal. … But with each passing year, and with each whimsical purchase, our libraries become more and more able to articulate who we are, whether we read the books or not.
— Nick Hornby
The books that the world calls immoral are the books that show the world its own shame.
— Oscar Wilde

When you reread a classic, you do not see more in the book than you did before; you see more in you than there was before

Cliff Fadiman

Reading requires an act of empathy, really. What you’re doing when you’re reading a book is saying, I’m going to turn off who I am for a little bit, and I’m going to enter the personality of another human being. Reading is a very generous act, but it’s a very helpful act if you really want to understand what another person is like.
Gary Shteyngart
The best moments in reading are when you come across something - a thought, a feeling, a way of looking at things - that you’d thought special, particular to you. And here it is, set down by someone else, a person you’ve never met, maybe even someone long dead. And it’s as if a hand has come out, and taken yours.

Creative responce to Looking For Alaska - John Green

We are all broken, some are just better at hiding it, but it's there.
Tiny fault lines in the mirrors the reflections we show to the world.
Every one is broken differently, shatters differently not redoable.
Drop your mirror it will break. Those pattens not re-creatable, a one of a kind.
Shattering fault lines.
Can we ever really know someone? Can you truly know them until they shatter irredeemably? Broken shards. The soul undeniably fragile. Handle with care.

Zombies, Riddles and parties Oh my!

I've been thinking lately about the concept of  a 'good christian'. I've come to the conclusion that it is an utter oxymoron (I love that word). You can't claim to be good and yet call yourself a Christian. To be a Christian is to realise that you are not good, in fact that you are 'bad', a sinner who needs Jesus.  This quote sums it up pretty well.

Here's some photos of my life this week:

Icky Day vs Anniversary

The 14th of February, Valentine's day or as I like to call it 'Icky day'. I have never liked Valentine's day.  Sure it's a celebration of love and there is nothing wrong with that. I just don't like that fact that hallmark invented a holiday to make money. It's the same reason I don't really like Mothers' day or Fathers' day. I love my parents but I don't like the thought of being obligated to buy them things just because someone says that I should. If I was a parent I'd rather receive a gift spontaneously and thoughtfully rather than 'Oh it's mothers' day, I have to get a gift'. (not that mothers' day gifts aren't genuine)  Anyway back to Valentine's day, I don't like the hype, everything's pink and red and heart shaped and the focus is strictly on romantic love.  Hearts, chocolates, roses it's all symbolic, let's get out of symbolism and into realism. The reality of what love really is. Not lust, not mushy lovey dovey Hollywood style, not romance. Love. Stand alone, entirely for someone else's good, not expecting anything in return, selfless, humble. God shows us the ultimate example of love in Jesus.
This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. 1 John 4:10
Alright enough of my pooping all over Valentine's day, don't get me wrong I love, love and I love celebrating love and showing people that I love them. Another very special event happens every year on the 14th of February. Yes, ironically my anniversary is the same day as Valentine's day.
Two years!

Two years of love, of growth, of learning, of laughter, of forgiving, of joy, of learning about God together.   (I could go on and on by mushyness is not my style.)

His present to me: A beautiful Pandora charm that says love in different languages.

My present to him: An engraved key to my car
(if you knew me you'd realise what a big deal that is)

What's new pussycat?

It's already partway through Feburary and I've well and truly  broken my attempt to write one blog a week. I have a couple of half written ones on backlog and hopefully by the end of the year it will averadge out. I haven't posted anything since we moved Nanna in January (she is settling in well).

The rest of misssion was great; great people, great kids, great location, all serving our great God.

My family and Scott's family went camping up at Barrington Tops for the Australia day long week-end. I had the most perfect night the night we arrrived; went night swimming by the light of the full moon in the creek with rapids. (I know it sound cliche but it was truely and absolutely B-E-Autiful!) Shaggy came too!

She might be little, but she has big personality and we love her!

She wasn't super keep on the water.

I've now done the first three weeks of my Swedish Massage course (Back and legs: front and back). I'm loving it. I've been doing quite a few casual shifts for Tiny Tutus over the last two weeks, but still looking for mor permanant work. Fridge is exploding with new kids! Praise God!  I think that's about all that's interesting right now.
