Leap Day

Today was Leap Day , that one day that happens every four years. So happy birthday to all who haven't had a birthday in four years.

Leap Day is traditionally that day that women are allowed to propose. (I use the term 'allowed' very loosely.) This tradition appears to have come from Ireland. It is said that this tradition started, when a deal was made between st Bridget and st Patric in order to equalise the social order once every four years, in the same that the leap day balance the calender.

If a man was to refuse the lady on the day he would have to pay a fine or give a gift (for example in some European countries, in the upper class; twelve pairs of gloves to hide the fact that she had no engagement ring.)

It must be hard to only have a birthday every four years. Though usually leap dayers celebrate on February 28 or March 1.

Happy birthday Until the next four years!
